“I want to thank you for helping me rediscover my love for reading with your book suggestions and book club. It helped me create my goal of a book a week this year. Almost there! And the four books I just bought will get me a little bit closer.” – Chris S.

Book of the Month: The Caliph’s House: A Year in Casablanca by Tahir Shah
Inspired by the Moroccan vacations of his childhood, Tahir Shah decides to buy a house in Casablanca and moves his family there from England in hopes of breaking out the monotony of life in London and exposing his children to a more carefree childhood.
It’s beautifully written and endlessly enthralling. Shah is a masterful writer and storyteller, and you’ll be glued to his every word. While dealing with corruption, the local bureaucracy, thieves, gangsters, jinns causing havoc, and the hassle that seems to come with even the most simple interactions, Shah weaves a story that is simply one of the best I’ve ever read.
We’ll be talking to the author at our next virtual book club meeting on January 26th. Come join us! (It’s free.)
If you’d like to see my past favorites, be sure to check out this page with all my favorites on Bookshop. We recently switched to Bookshop because they support small, independent bookstores. The discounts aren’t as big as Amazon but you are helping support small booksellers that are the lifeblood for many communities. (But, if you only use Amazon, here’s the link to our Amazon page too.)
